Community Journalism in Zimbabwe
“When I think of someday telling such stories at home in Zimbabwe, then I know why I want to be a journalist.”
The ‘small town paper’ is a common feature in America but what does community journalism look like outside of the United States? My project and research paper looks at African community and popular media, and explores the unique ways that journalism is practised on the continent. The paper focuses particularly on Zimbabwe where, as a white Zimbabwean, I belong to different communities that have historically and recently been at odds. Zimbabwe is in desperate need of healing and as an aspiring journalist and writer, the question I ask is; how can some form of African community journalism be a part of the healing process that my country needs?
